Do you want to become an owner-operator trucker in the Golden State? Working as a trucker can be incredibly freeing, and in a beautiful state like California, it will take you to some amazing places. But there are some documents and filings you must make before you can operate legally. Here are the five things you need to drive a truck in California.

1. USDOT Number

USDOT numbers are a way for the FMCSA and brokers to access information about driver safety in your company. They are essentially company identification numbers, which allow others to use SAFER to learn about your record. USDOT numbers are required for businesses that use vehicles of a certain size. For truckers, USDOT numbers are required if you have a vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds.

2. CA Number

Carrier Identification numbers, or CA numbers, are issued by the California Highway Patrol. While USDOT numbers identify your company in a national database, CA numbers identify each specific truck. In order to get a CA number, you must prove that your truck meets all state highway safety regulations. Therefore, they ensure that every California trucker is following safety guidelines and keeping our highways safe.

3. MCP (Motor Carrier Permit)

Once you have your CA number, you can apply for an MCP. Unlike the CA number, the California DMV issues these permits. They prove that a trucker has registered their CA number with the CHP and, therefore, that they have met all the necessary requirements. Notably, if you employ another person, you’ll need worker’s compensation insurance to apply for this permit, so make sure you have that first!

4. MC Number

Because of their similar names, many people confuse MC numbers with the MCP. However, these two filings are very different. MC numbers are only for interstate truckers, so you won’t need one if you’ll only drive in California. All interstate truckers must get these numbers to haul federally regulated goods across state lines. You can read more about MC numbers at our sister site, DOT Operating Authority.

5. Quality Insurance

Quality insurance coverage is a must for any trucker, and California is no exception. The state requires you to purchase liability insurance at the very minimum, and you’ll need worker’s comp to apply for an MCP. However, there’s so much more coverage that you can get!
