Once again, the San Diego streets will soon be flooded by dedicated fans of the latest films, shows, and comics. Fans from all walks of life unite together here to all bask in their love of all things “nerdy.” This year, Comic Con is set to start on Thursday, July 25th and finishing up on Sunday, July 28th. If you live in San Diego, you can expect to start seeing costumes and cosplays of all characters imaginable filling the streets.
Already, buildings in the area are being dressed for the occasion.
Many major buildings in downtown San Diego are being wrapped in full building wall wraps to celebrate and advertise films and shows that are expected to be featured at this year’s convention. Some also feature displays of upcoming projects that will likely be enjoyed by Comic Con goers when they release. Specifically, the Gaslamp District has seen several building transformations. The large apartment towers from Park 12 can be seen with wrapping advertising the latest Teenage Mutant Ninga Turtles series, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninga Turtles. This wrapping is particularly of note, as it is so grandiose in size, it was applied in two pieces to two different sides of the complex. Other building wraps can be seen around the city, such as one around the Marriott Marquis showing Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.
If you plan to attend the convention, there are some things you can do to best prepare.
Be sure to plan for this year’s Comic Con accordingly. You can find daily schedules posted for the panels and events, as well as booth assignments on the convention’s website. Whether you plan to come in costume or not, be sure to follow guidelines, which can also be found online. Pack accordingly with water, sunscreen, snacks, and a sharpie and notebook!
If you do not plan to attend the convention, but live in San Diego, anticipate a busy weekend.
The convention is always huge, drawing over 200,000 people in attendance. This means city streets will likely be busier than normal starting early next week. Plan on high traffic throughout the day and adjust your schedule accordingly. Also, do not be surprised to see people walking around in costumes even when not at the convention. Lastly, enjoy the festivities the convention brings. Often local places host special events in honor of the convention that are open to anyone. Pop in to one of these and enjoy a lowkey version of the event!
