A multi-vehicle crash on Saturday closed all westbound lanes of SR 54 in the South Bay area. What was initially a two-car crash without major injuries became more serious after other vehicles became involved. After about an hour and a half, California Highway Patrol officials were able to reopen part of westbound SR 54.

The incident began at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 6th. A Lexus and a Ford Mustang collided near the Briarwood Exit of SR 54 in Bonita. The Mustang contained two women who escaped without injury. However, the man driving the Lexus was not so lucky.

After the man had taken off his seatbelt, a third vehicle became involved in the crash. A black pickup truck crashed into the Lexus, causing both vehicles to wind up flipped over. The truck driver sustained a major cut to one of his hands, but the Lexus driver got the worst of it.

His leg became trapped by his car after the pickup crash. While EMS was able to cut his leg out and free the man, there remains a chance that he will lose the leg.

The crash closed westbound SR 54 for over an hour.

CHP and San Diego Fire responded quickly to the incident, blocking off traffic and rendering emergency aid to the victims of the crash. By 10 p.m., two westbound SR 54 lanes had reopened. Caltrans announced that the entire freeway was open once more by 10:45.

Incidents like these remind us just how important it is to have good insurance coverage. Of course, all drivers are required by law to have liability insurance. However, if you find yourself in an accident like this, you’ll wish you had coverage for collisions and greater coverage overall. Especially if you rely on your vehicle for your livelihood, make sure to get all the coverage you and your business need!
